A New Market For Farm Pellet Mills And PlantsPellet mills and complete pellet plants have been installed on pellet plants for many years, however they have always previously been purely for the production of animal feeds. However the market is now expanding with fuel pellets, and these fuel pellets are not just made from wood but other biomass resources which can be found and grown on the farm. There is also a greater emphasis on supporting local fuel production and consumption. Therefore a local farm is the ideal place to start a new business providing fuel to the local area. Setting up a small pellet mill or pellet plant on the farm is generally straight forward. In many cases there are already existing buildings which can be used and also three phase power is already installed for milking systems. The type of pellet mill that maybe installed can be seen in the video below which goes into some detail.
While wood pellets if possible would be a good income stream for the farmer there are other fuel pellets they can produce using agricultural wastes and even animal wastes. Apparently horse manure produces some of the best solid fuel available with a very high heat value. Another advantage for the farmer in owning his own pellet mill is to reduce his own heating needs from his farm horse to other heat demanding buildings such as chicken sheds. Other agricultural wastes are straw and other waste products from food production. These pellets may produce more ash than wood pellets, but they could also be offered to local customers at a price that was appealing. As transportation is practically eliminated it means the farmer can still make a profit from their pellet mill even though they are selling a much cheaper fuel pellet. |
