Alternative Energy

Alternative Energy Sources

There are many different sources of alternative energy, these include wind, solar, wave and the focus here biomass. Alternative may seem like its a 'new' form of energy, however all alternative energy types have predated the use of fossil fuels for energy. However today because of our heavy dependence and addition on fossil fuels in all areas of our lives, any other form of energy is referred to as an alternative.

Alternative Energy Resources

There are many different types of alternative energy resources which are available to use, and biomass is part of our alternative energy resources. Biomass is any living or recently dead organic matter which can be used as a fuel. So this not only includes purpose grown fuel crops for example, but also waste streams and agricultural residues. Take wheat, barley and corn farming for example. Currently as wheat and barley straw and corn cobs are regarded as a waste from the food crop, most of these resources are not used. For example in many parts of the world where laws still allow, straw is simply burnt in the field and the energy produced wasted. However these alternative 'waste' resources can be easily turned into a high value, high efficiency fuel by processing them into pellets.

The video below shows us burning a collection of fuel pellets we produced here at PelHeat, including wheat and barley straw. These pellets burn very efficiently, and produce far more heat than a standard log stove or boiler. Efficiency is one of the key benefits of pellets.

Wood is obviously still one of the most common known forms of an alternative fuel source, and wood pellets for pellet stoves and boilers are growing in popularity all over the world.

Wood Pellet Production Guide

At PelHeat the type of alternative energy resource we focus on is pellets. However not just wood pellets, we believe that truly alternative fuel should also include other resources not currently utilized for fuel. For example these include some of the pellets to the left produced here at PelHeat which include straw, grass and other biomass pellets. We received many questions and emails on exactly how the pellet production process works. Which raw materials can and cannot be processed into quality pellets.

The PelHeat Wood Pellet Production Guide provides an introduction to how biomass pellets and wood pellets are produced. The guide covers how a pellet mill,

pellet press and pellet machine operate to manufacture wood fuel pellets. All biomass fuel pellets including wood pellet are forms of alternative energy
