Biomass PlantDeveloping the future energy network depends on a series of renewable and alternative energy solutions. These include wind, solar and biomass. A biomass plant can refer to several energy processes. Biomass can be processed in a plant into liquid or gaseous fuels. However here we will focus on a biomass pellet plant. Biomass can be compressed into pellet form for a variety of uses, predominantly fuel pellets for pellet stoves and boilers. Biomass in pellet form has many advantages for transportation and combustion. Biomass Renewable Energy and Fuels One of key negatives of fossil fuels, is there is only a limited supply of energy resources, and the location of these resources is also limited, meaning many western countries are dependant on energy supplied by foreign countries. In very uncertain global security and economic issues, promoting energy security is also a key priority. Biomass and other forms of renewable energy can help to replace fossil fuel consumption in all current forms of energy. Biomass is a renewable form of energy as we can replace the biomass resources we use within the life span of their consumption. There are many example of potential biomass energy resources. The first and most obvious source of biomass than can be used in a biomass plant is woody biomass. Wood has been used for hundred of thousands of years for energy production. However wood in its raw form does not actually burn that efficiently, therefore upgrading the wood into pellet form is a more modern and practical solution. Woody biomass can be sourced as a waste from current timber operations and general woodland management. Some people claim that using wood for energy is unsustainable as there isn't enough woody waste for our energy needs, which is true, but wood is also not the only form of biomass that can be used to produce pellet fuel. Practically all grasses and straw can be turned into pellet fuel. Some produce better fuels than others though. For example there are cases where people are using small pellet mills to produce grass pellets from lawn cuttings. Though these pellets will burn and generate a lot of heat, the issue is with possible clinker formations and corrosion. Lawn grass contains produces a lot of chlorine during combustion. Chlorine is a high temperature corrosive, and most pellet stoves and boilers simply cannot withstand the corrosion of lawn grass pellets for long. Biomass Furnace and Pellet Burners Though many biomass materials can be processed into pellet form at the biomass plant, many pellet burners cannot use the pellets. However some units are flexible and rugged enough to use practically any biomass fuel pellet. Buying these pellet burners is wiser long term investment as it means you can use cheaper pellet fuels and reduce running costs. Biomass Pellet Production Solutions Making a fuel pellet at the biomass plant required the right skills and importantly the right equipment. The pellet mill is the central unit of equipment, however not all pellet mills are equal. Different pellet mills have different speeds and power inputs to produce pellets. |
