Miscanthus Farmers Operating Their Own Pellet Mill

Within the last decade there has been growing support for the use of biomass in energy production. In the UK and elsewhere many farmers were convinced by the power companies to grow miscanthus as a profitable crop. Miscanthus does not grow from seed, it grows fro rhizomes split from existing miscanthus plants. The cost to plant a field with miscanthus can be significant, and therefore that field from that point onwards is pretty much dedicated to growing miscanthus. However many farmers found the prices the power companies originally offered were much higher than the price they offered when the crop was ready for harvest. This left many farmers feeling cheated, and they therefore started looking for other markets for their miscanthus, pellets been one option.

Miscanthus is processing in the pellet mill in a similar fashion to most other biomass materials. Small pellet mills and pellet plants can be installed on the farmer to process his own miscanthus. The pellet mill can then also be used to produce their own feed pellets for their animals and wood pellets if they can source suitable local resources. In pellet for the miscanthus can be used in more combustion systems than simply loose chopped miscanthus. However miscanthus pellets do not burn like wood pellets, they produce more ash and may generate a clinker formation in the bottom of the fire. However the cost of the pellets should be cheaper than wood pellets, which will appeal to the more proactive consumers looking for a fuel bargin that was grown locally.
