But Why Bother With Pellets At All?
Pellets are a compressed from of the original raw material, the raw material in question can be almost any organic matter. Pellets have a uniform shape, size and density. The density of a pellet is far higher than the original raw material. This is one of the key advantages of pellets in terms of increased energy density, lower transport costs and smaller storage space.
What Is Biomass And Where Is It?
Biomass is any cellulose organic matter which can be used as a fuel source. Biomass includes wood and wood waste, grasses and straws and other energy crops such as hemp. Almost all biomass materials can be processed via a pelletizer into pellets. In terms of pelletizing biomass, each biomass material has different characteristics. Some biomass materials can produce pellets without the need for additional binders. However for some biomass, binders are required to produce pellets of sufficient quality and density. A common binder for fuel pellets is modified cornstarch as it does not effect the fuel.
