Today, pellet production is becoming more widespread. This obviously includes large scale production faculties, however it also includes small scale production, and even pellet mills operated at peoples homes. Small portable pellet mills are becoming more common. Many people are interested in a small portable pellet mill to produce not only their own fuel, but additional pellets to sell back into the local community. Pellets bring in this new dimension to home heating that has not existed since we moved away from using local timber logs to heat our homes and businesses. However it is also important to remember, where logs simply took advantage of local wood resources, pellets can take advantage of a much wider range of local biomass resources. For example, lets say there was very little local available wood resources, but a large volume of agricultural waste such as corn cobs and corn stalks. These resources which currently have very little value and use could be processed locally with a small portable pellet mill into fuel pellets. There are multiple benefits from this. It generates a use for the waste from corn production, and generates another income for the farmer. It also means food and fuel are kept separate, in fact it could even reduce the cost of corn for food. It also means a local community would be supporting its own economy and import less foreign oil and reduce heating costs.

Pellet Mills For Home Use and Biomass

The most common design of small portable pellet mill used for the home is the flat die pellet mill. It uses a very simple design which has existed since the beginning of the 20th century when pellet production first began. The advantage of the flat die design, particularly form a small pellet mill for home use is the fact is has very few components, and a much lower weight than other designs of pellet mill, making the units much more portable. These small portable pellet mills have been used for decades by farmers to produce feed pellets for their animals. However now more purpose designed portable pellet mills are being produced to process wood and biomass into fuel pellets. Pellet Mill Equipment and Fuel Pellets

There are various processes required in pellet production. As well as the pellet mills, the material must have a particle size below 6mm and an average moisture content of 15% to produce strong durable pellets. To reduce the biomass down to 6mm, a chipper and then a hammer mill will be used. To dry the raw material down to 15 percent moisture, either a pipe dryer or rotary drum dryer will be used. After the pellet mill the dryer is the most expensive piece of equipment, it is also the second most energy intensive process. Therefore it can save a significant amount of money in equipment and running costs if a dryer is not required. Straws and grasses are generally dry.
