Processing Christmas Trees Through A Pellet Mill

When approaching the pellet fuel market its important to keep an open mind to new possibilities and opportunities. Fuel pellets can be produced from practically any source of virgin wood or biomass materials. Christmas or post Christmas could be one of these opportunities. Those who purchase a real tree then have to dispose of these tree, and they will often just take them to their local tip. Much of this wood will just end up in landfill which is a huge waste of energy. However this material could be collected from local tips with contracts with local councils and then processed locally into wood pellets. Now obviously a pellet mill business has to look for other materials the rest of the year, and this could be a similar deal with the council to collect and process in the pellet mill other virgin wood waste. We often get asked about processing wood pallets in the pellet mill. This can be done however you must avoid nails and the wood must not be chemically treated.

You maybe able to secure some local funding from the council as you will be reducing their waste disposal costs while generating additional local jobs and taxation. There are many other potential opportunities within the local area to collect wood waste to be processed in the pellet mill. If you market and properly advertise you are turning local wood waste into fuel and offering those pellets at a fair price, you should receive good local support. You do have to factor in that much of this wood will be above 15% moisture, and therefore will require drying before it can be used in the pellet mill. Trying and remove as much moisture naturally, and then use either a pipe or rotary dryer to remove the remaining moisture to get below the 15%.
