Processing Waste Streams In A Pellet Mill

As well as turning most biomass materials into pellets for fuel purposes there is a lot of interest in processing various waste streams in the pellet mill. Now some of this material is referred to as waste however actually its often as good as any other biomass. For instance the wood from tree surgery is often called waste, and still today in many cases is sent to landfill. This material could be collected and turned into a fairly high standard fuel pellet in a local pellet mill. A local pellet mill is important because the more the material is transported the more it adds to the processing cost and therefore it less likely to be used and still end up in landfill. However not all wood materials can be used in the pellet mill for fuel pellets, some of the material is waste and should be treated as such. Any wood which has been chemically treated should not be used for fuel due to the emissions that can be produced during combustion. The other obstacle to over come with wood waste is the possibility of metal such as nails. If any hard object enters the hammer mill or pellet mill this can cause serious damage and made lead to very high repair costs. Therefore all materials should be screened before it is send to the pellet mill.

There maybe potential other materials such as paper and cardboard that can be processed into pellets. However generally these pellets will have a reduced market appeal due to the higher percentage of ash they will generate. However customers who have pellet burners which can deal with the ash maybe interested in a pellet which is significantly cheaper. Its important to look at the potential market for these pellets, offer it will be more industrial than residential customers.
