Renewable EnergyResourceWe currently depend heavily on fossil fuel energy to meet most of the energy demands within society. However the costs of this dependence are now clear to see. As the source of this energy is very focused within only a few regions, and the global demand is so high and increasing, market forces dictate that demand versus supply sets the price, and the price is only going to increase in the long term. Among the fact only a few regions on earth control these resources, one of the biggest issues with fossil fuel energy is it is not a renewable energy resource. The rate of our consumptions of oil and gas is far greater than the rate these resources are replaced. So this obviously means at some point we will run out, and with global demand increasing along with population, this could happen much sooner than many people think. Therefore to provide a more stable source of energy for the future, our dependence on fossil fuels need to be moved to a more renewable resource of energy such as biomass. Renewable Energy From Biomass Pellets Biomass is any organic or plant material which can be used as a source of energy. Therefore biomass plant matter can be replaced, and be a renewable source of energy. However, certain biomass materials are more suitable than other as a renewable energy resource. For example, if you look at an oak tree, oak burns very well and produces a lot of energy and very low ash so generated less work. However, the growth cycle of biomass is very long, and again the rate of consumption would easily out weigh the rate of growth. Also, its important to look at the best utilization of available land. Therefore in many cases, it makes sense to source biomass from existing crops, particularly those used in food production. This does not mean though using food for fuel, it means using the remainder of the crop for fuel. Take corn for example, after harvest there is a vast amount of potential biomass remaining in the field from the corn cobs and stalks. This biomass can be processed locally into a modern form of biomass energy, the fuel pellet. Biomass Resources and Local Economy Fuel pellets are a compressed form of biomass energy, which can be used in pellet stoves and boilers to heat homes and businesses. Through processing the waste from local agriculture or wood working into fuel pellets, can generate a significant number of local jobs. It would also provide the local area with a renewable energy resource. Therefore the area would have a more stable and cheaper source of fuel Wood Pellet Plants and Making Pellets So what is the process to turn a local renewable energy resource into a pellet. Well to begin with the biomass needs to be shredded, there are various pieces of equipment to do this task, and the best option may change depending on the specific biomass. A hammer mill is generally used which will produce a consistent particle size ideal for the pellet mill. If the material is at the right moisture content it can then be placed in the pellet mill where under heat an pressure the material is compressed into a pellet.
