Ring Die Pellet Mill Benefits For Wood Pellets

The two main types of pellet mill used to produce wood pellets currently are the flat die and the ring die. Here at PelHeat we support the use of the ring die pellet mill which can been seen in the design of the mini pellet mill and our pellet plants.

Flat die pellet mills have been dropped by all but one of the major pellet mill manufacturers. The reasons for this are that they have several disadvantages. These include increased electrical consumption, increased roller and die wear and more inconsistency in pellet quality. Wood pellets are one of the hardest pellets to produce. Producing pellets for animal feed or from low density materials such as straws and grasses is relatively easy. However wood fibre requires more heat and more power to form a pellet. Often it demands more than most pellet mills can offer, particularly the flat die pellet mill imports from China. Due to the extra demands wood pellet production puts on the pellet mill the ring die design holds several advantages. Flat die pellet mills suffer from roller slip due the speed difference between the inner and outer edges of the die. This slip is what increases energy consumption and parts wear beyond necessary levels. The ring die pellet mill does not suffer from these issues and as a result has lower operating costs per ton of wood pellets produced. At the end of the day it comes down to maximising profits, and this is only possible if costs can be kept to a minimum. Some may argue UK made pellets are much more expensive than Chinese pellet mills. However UK made equipment will hold its value, produce better quality pellets which fetch a better price and have much lower operating production costs.
