Setting Up A Pellet Mill On The Farm For Feed And FuelOne particular industry who we receive a lot of interest from the farming community. In today's tough economic times to reduce the costs of operating the farm are crucial, and also the potentially generate new income streams. Farms have huge energy and food bills, and also have a lot of waste streams to deal with such as straw and waste litter. Pelleted feed is getting more and more expensive. However the benefits are clear, the best blend of nutrients can be provided with pelleted feed and it keeps better. However for many farmers who have cheap access to the raw materials the idea of operating a small pellet mill or pellet plant is appealing. Not only could they cover their own needs they could potentially offer a cheaper feed locally due to the reduction in transportation costs. However feed is only one area where a pellet machine on the farm could prove to reduce operating costs and generate new income. Poultry farmers for instance struggle with the cost of heating their sheds. This is primarily done via gas such as propane and the costs now are beginning to go beyond even the cost of feed. With a pellet press or pellet plant on the premises the farmer could generate his own fuel pellets to heat the sheds from the chicken litter. The mixture of wood shavings and chicken manure is very energy dense. Once in pellet form there are range of burners from eastern Europe that can be installed to heat the sheds. Obviously been able to use a waste to reduce a current cost is appealing to most people. However for many farmers today this saving can literally save their farm. Also once the pellet mill or pellet plant has been installed the farmer could consider growing a form of biomass such as hemp and selling fuel pellets into the local community.
