Are Switchgrass Biomass Fuel Pellets Going To Dominate?

Adopting wood pellets and biomass heating over oil, gas and electricity is partly about fighting climate change. However a large part of most people decisions is to have cheaper fuel that is also locally produced. Please click below.

Also many people are looking for energy independence and the security that can bring. The wood industry cannot meet the growing and future demand for fuel pellets, therefore other materials such as switchgrass need to be used. Switchgrass can be grown in a wide range of locations, and where food crops cannot be grown. For instance switchgrass is very resilient to flooding, therefore can be grown in places where you would not risk growing other crops. Many other biomass materials can be made into fuel pellets. Please watch the video below to see. Another major advantage with switchgrass is that when it comes to harvest the crop it is very dry, which makes it ideal as a fuel. Also unlike many other grasses switchgrass is not that corrosive. So how can switchgrass be turned into a fuel, well it requires compression. Due to the low density of the material, to create an efficient fuel the switchgrass needs to be compressed into pellets. This can be done on a local scale with a small scale pellet plant, or a large scale plant if there are sufficient yields and a sufficient demand. Keeping transportation of the raw material and the finished pellets to a minimum is very important. Therefore it is important to try and develop local energy loops where the whole process is kept local. This also reduces carbon emissions from transport and help to create local jobs. Reeds can also be used to produce fuel pellets. We recently completed an installation of a 400 kg/h pellet plant in the Ukraine that will produce fuel pellets that will be burnt in the local power station.
