UK Wood Pellets And European CertificationThere is now a new standard in Europe for premium wood pellets called ENplus. Verdo Renewables which is a Danish owned company is the is the first UK based pellet production facility to meet the new ENplus standard. The Enplus standard has been developed in Austria with co-operation from the European Pellet Council. The objective of this new standard is to further ensure the quality of the fuel to the end user. The complete manufacturing process is evaluated to meet the required standard. While it is very important that consumers are aware of the quality of the fuel they are purchasing the continued focus on purely premium wood pellets does not allow for the growth of other wood pellet fuels and biomass pellets. Premium wood pellets are only produced from the waste sawdust from timber production. Therefore this is not sustainable to grow the pellet market as there is only so much sawdust available without resorting to actually cutting down trees for wood pellets. This should never been done as there is so much other wood waste and biomass materials that can be used to produce fuel pellets. At PelHeat we support the development of the wider fuel pellet market based on biomass not just the waste from timber production. We also support the development of small scale pellet production facilities to reduce the distance of fuel transportation from raw material source to the fuel end user. We have produced a beginners guide to making pellets. You can see a video of a mini pellet mill on the next page, please click below. We developed this small pellet machine mainly for testing and research purposes. However some customers are producing their own animal feed or niche products such as fish bait. The single phase press can be used from any standard domestic electrical socket, which is not common for mills. |
