Using A Proportioner Hammer Mill For Animal Feed Pellet PlantsWhen making pellets from any material, size reduction is an important part of the process. The hammer mill is generally the final stage of size reduction before the material is sent to the pellet mill. When making fuel pellets it is fairly simple to feed material into the hammer mill. However when making animal feed pellets a whole range of materials are added into the feed. Each ingredient needs to be added at set amounts and then processed through the hammer mill. Below you can see the type of hammer mill used on our small scale animal feed pellet plants. This is size reduction unit known as a Proportioner hammer mill.
Instead of a single material feed into the top of the hammer mill, the Proportioner mill has seven separate feed inlets with screw augers to add material into the hammer mill for size reduction and mixing. This machine means a custom blend of animal feed pellets can be produced. However such a hammer mill can also be used to help with biomass fuel pellet testing. Some research is testing the combustion of fuel pellets made from a mixture of materials. The Proportioner mill makes it simple for unique blends of biomass fuel pellets to be produced. It is also worth noting that we use a gravity hammer mill apposed to a cyclonic hammer mill used in most other applications. We can do this as we use screw augers to collect the material from the base of the hammer mill and send it to the hammer mill. This means there is less dust generated and therefore it is a healthier environment for the pellet plant operators.
