Wood Fuel PelletsThe current heating options today are very limited, fossil fuel oriented and getting more and more expensive to run. Gas and oil heating solutions began to dominate the heating market from the 1970's, with many leaving behind coal and wood heating options due to the additional maintenance required. Also, at the time, oil and gas was actually very cheap, and could more than compete on a cost basis. Therefore to consumers the choice was clear, less work for the same heat and cost. However, now the cost advantages of these fuels are long gone, and other implications of using these fuels are coming to light. Oil, gas and coal heating solutions are carbon polluters, as they place additional carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This rise in carbon dioxide is one of the key contributors to climate change and global warming. The only way we can reduce and slow these effects is to limit our use of fossil energy, and adopt low carbon and carbon neutral heating alternatives. Wood, and other biomass resources can now play a significant role in carbon emission reduction. Wood Pellet Fuel and Biomass Pellets Where in the past heating with wood meant purely log heating, or maybe wood chip, today there are much more consumer friendly and practical heating options. Though many people today still have log fires for their main living space, very few actually use that as their main heat source. The reasons are obvious, and the same reasons why many moved away from wood heating. Wood fuel pellets can bring wood heating back firmly into the 21st century, and truly work around a busy modern lifestyle while meeting the total heating requirements of a building of any size. With the pellets uniform small size, increase density and reduced moisture percentage and efficient, practical and clean fuel source is born. Due to these properties wood fuel pellets can be used in automated pellet stove and boilers for complete heating needs. Wood Pellets Heating and Pellet Stoves Wood pellet heating systems are in fact very simple, yet efficient at what they do. The pellets are held in a hopper, which can normally at least hold enough fuel for the entire day. At the base of the hopper is a screw feeding auger, which will take the pellets to the combustion chamber. The speed and timing of the auger is controlled via a computer which controls all the features on the stove. The combustion chamber has a burn pot, igniter and fan assistance. When the computer is told to operate the stove, via a thermostat for example, the auger will feed pellets, the igniter will start the fire along with the fan providing combustion air. With the right amount of air fed into the fire controlled via the computer efficient combustion can be achieved with no visible smoke, and more heat generated than any wood log stove. Wood Pellet Plant and Pellet Making To produce a pellet there are various steps and processes. The material is ground to a fine particle size, dried and then finally compressed into a pellet. The pellet mill is the main piece of equipment, and using immense forces of pressure and heat melts the wood to form a solid and durable wood pellet fuel.
