Wood Pellets Sales

The sale of wood pellets takes place in many forms. This can be from small sales of individual bags from your local retail store, to larger orders made with pellet dealers or even directly with the pellet manufacturer. The internet has made it possible to source a wide range of pellet prices, however buying the cheapest pellets is always not the best option. The majority of the cheapest pellet prices will be of imported pellets produced in developing countries. It is not always clear what standard and quality of fuel the imported pellet are. This can be very important for some pellet stove and boiler owners. Most pellet stoves and boilers can only use premium grade pellets which produce around 0.5% ash. If the pellets generate more ash, depending on the design of the stove this may cause the stove to fail. Pellets produced in most western countries have to comply with specific standards to be sold as premium pellet fuel. However many retailers of imported pellets are simply not aware of the quality of the fuel they sell. Some foreign pellet manufactures have used certain tactics to produce cheaper pellet fuel, by using wood with bark, adding paper and cardboard. At PelHeat we do encourage the use of more biomass and waste wood resources, however it should always be made clear exactly what has been used to produce the pellet fuel and its quality.

Wood Pellets For Pellet Stove

As stated some pellet stoves cannot burn certain grades of wood pellet fuel efficiently. This is due to poor burn pot design. Some pellet stoves provide ash removal only by means of air movement from the combustion fan. The fan speed is set for maximum combustion efficiency, however if the percentage of ash increases, the fan will not remove any more ash. Therefore a build up of ash occurs creating combustion issues. Here purchasing the right quality fuel is vital.

Wood Pellet Suppliers and Pellet Prices

The price of wood pellets your supplier should be based on the quality of the fuel they provide. For example the highest priced pellets should be premium wood pellets. It is important to check however these pellets do meet the premium standard. Firstly request proof from the supplier that they have sent the pellets off for testing and have a certificate from the national standards agency. Then ideally before you purchase several tons of pellets, try to purchase a sample of a few hundred kilograms to test burn in your pellet stove or boiler. This is obviously the best way to truly test if your pellet burner can deal with the ash, and how much heat the pellets generate. Also make sure the prices you are being quoted include delivery.

Wood Pellet Dealers and Delivery Costs

In many cases it makes sense financially and guarantees a more stable pellet supply by using your local pellet dealer. Inquire where the pellets are sourced from, and try to encourage them to support the local pellet industry. Using locally produced pellets reduces the carbon foot print of the fuel, and at the same time help to generate more local jobs. As delivery is a large part of the cost of pellet fuel. Your local pellet dealer can usually get you a better total cost on your pellets as delivery distance is much less.
